Rebozo is the name of a multifunctional shawl used by rural and urban women in Mexico and Central America. Rebozo's are used to carry babies, to transport products to the market and to protect from the weather. It is also a symbol of status, an heirloom piece and a holder of national identity. A rebozo is an embrace, a protector; content and container. Frida Kahlo and the Mexican muralists made the rebozo famous all over the world.

This silk rebozo is made with the ikat technique where the yarns are dyed prior to weaving. The resist is achieved by binding individual yarns or bundles with tight strings. The different colours are layered to achieve this elaborate result. Since the surface design is achieved through the yarns, this is a double-faced piece. The rebozo is finished with rapacejo, which is a type of fringe made with knots that create intricate figures. Rebozos are labor intensive taking an average of one month and the work of many people, usually all members of a family who carry the tradition from their ancestors.
